OVERVIEW :
In NW Corfu, Paleokastritsa, with the dazzling blue of its waters and the bright green of the vegetation, with the imposing rocks and the mysterious caves is one of the most famous destinations in the Mediterranean. The view of Paleokastritsa is magical from the picturesque Monastery, with the prominent figures of the monks, while the collection of Byzantine icons, sacred vestments and the huge bones of a whale that was once washed up in the area is impressive.
Next to Paleokastritsa stand the villages of Lakones and Makrades with their own breathtaking views. Lakones is a traditional village which is said to have been founded by Spartan settlers back in the ancient years. It has all the typical features of the Corfu villages as well as a unique view! Makrades is also a village that retains the character of the traditional villages of Corfu. In both villages, the traditional cafés, the architecture and the sounds of nature create a magicalscenery which is recorded in our memory like a postcard.
Kanoni, on the outskirts of the city, was the capital city of Corfu in the ancient times. There are excavations of important archaic, classical, Roman and Byzantine findings throughout the area which establish its uninterrupted historical course. From the top of the hill, the visitor will admires one of the most characteristic picture of Greece, the monastery of Vlacherna and the little island ofPontikonisi.
The Old Town of Corfu, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site since 2007, is cosmopolitan, welcoming and charming. Full of small monumental buildings, narrow, winding streets, small squares, dense buildings and a very large square where no-one can resist walking. Small restaurants, nice shops, elegant cafés, delicious ice creams and traditional grocery stores compose a lively cinema backdrop between the two imposing stone fortresses, built by the Venetian rulers of the island.
The Old Town of Corfu embodies all the characteristics of its conquerors and protectors, the Venetians, the French and the British. Along with its modern functions, it maintains a very special cosmopolitan air of elegance which can be felt everywhere in the town.
